Significant direction for the future of the Y was given when the decision was made to have the Community Aquatic Center tie into our existing facility. It meant the Y was expanding its physical foot print and as a result would improve aquatic opportunities, reception and access with new locker rooms and therapeutic options. This decision also meant that we were reaffirming our commitment to stay in our current location and give new life to our nearly 60 year old building. This second phase campaign demonstrates that commitment to our existing facility and responds to today’s community needs.
Remodeling and repurposing our current facility will give us the opportunity to provide equal access to all of our facility, increase safety in our design and respond to community demand.
Priority One: Youth Programs
It is our first priority to find a new home for our Child Care Center that has been displaced by the construction of the new entry to the Y. We also want to take this opportunity to expand space for our after school program. These two programs have strong demand in our community. Currently serving 140 youth between the two programs, a remodel of the facility would allow us to serve nearly twice as many youth.
Priority Two: Health and Well Being Expansion and Relocation
Currently our cardio room, cycling room, yoga room and aerobic gym are all located on the second floor of the Y. It is our hope to move all of this programming to the main floor and in a consolidated “zone” so that those with physical limitations can access all classes and limit duplicating offerings in two separate areas. Our weight room and cardio rooms are often at maximum capacity and equipment is tighter than safety standards recommend.
Priority Three: Arts and Big Horn Programming
Our Arts department has shown tremendous growth over the past two years with diverse offerings that allow all youth a chance to explore a medium that brings them joy. From pre-school singing and arts classes to junior high group guitar classes range in size from 8-25 kids in a room of 200 sq feet. Big Horn Friday all-day programming also operates out of this small space and has a waitlist weekly for the maximum 25 spots.
Priority Four: Camp
The Sheridan County YMCA has owned Camp Roberts for over ten years. Our camp has reached a point in which many infrastructure projects have surfaced necessitate attention for safety and continuation of programming. This list of projects include a bridge, kitchen and cabin repairs. Our camp serves over 1,000 youth every summer.
