Activate America:  A YMCA of the USA Initiative
Let’s Activate Sheridan!
As many of us know, America is in a health crisis so severe that it threatens to reverse a centuries-long trend.  For the first time in memory, this generation of children could face a lower life expectancy than their parents.  It is the defining issue of this generation and the next.

As a result of over five years of extensive work and research through National projects like the Gulick Collaborative and Pioneering Healthier Communities, the YMCA of the USA has determined that the factors defining this health crisis are within our society’s power to influence.

Well-being is not just about exercising to lose weight.  It is about the condition of the whole person in spirit, mind, and body as realized by the individual.  It is a progressive definition of wellness that provides a framework for the health seeker and recognizes the many factors that influence total health.

Individuals and organizations working in this arena must ask themselves if they have programs that can support the health-seekers – those children, adults, seniors, and families searching for ways to succeed in improving their lifestyles.  The ongoing research by the YMCA of the USA’s projects mentioned earlier, is showing the following:
  • Current program mixes do not provide a “starting point” for health seekers and is predominantly exercise oriented.
  • There are few options in which families can participate together.
  • Health seekers want to develop relationships with health and fitness professionals who will listen to them, support their goals and follow-up with them.
  • Fitness facilities, public health departments, hospitals, schools, government, and other community organizations must work together and act as powerful catalysts for community change.
  • Innovative and holistic programming is needed for health seekers.
  • Health seekers want comfortable relationships with health and fitness professionals.  They want to be listened to, motivated without being intimidated, and be gently coached to succeed.
  • Human resource professionals in health and fitness must understand the staffing needs of the health seekers and hire accordingly.
To succeed in overcoming our nation’s health crisis, the YMCA of the USA has recognized five critical gaps that must be closed.  We have to:
  1. move from competing for a market share of the fitness population to targeting health seeking youth, adults, seniors, and families.
  2. move from viewing membership as providing access to facilities, programs, equipment, and personal trainers to defining membership in terms of relationships, engagement, support, and involvement.
  3. move from “canned” programs focused on a single activity or service to a variety of programs, activities, and events developed locally for and with health seekers, fostering small communities of support.
  4. move from environments primarily designed to support fitness and program activities to those primarily designed to support individuals in their pursuit of well-being.
  5. move from leadership that is building-centered to leadership that balances internal and external focus on supporting the pursuit of well-being by all.
Realizing that this community endeavor is a marathon effort and not a sprint, the Sheridan County YMCA has been receiving strategic and tactical support from the YMCA of the USA along with tools and resources to assist us in impacting the future health of our community.  The Sheridan County YMCA committed to join the YMCA of the USA’s next phase of “Activate America” called Capacity Building.
